It may seem trivial and trite (and it certainly isn't the only solution on offer) but one very simple way to try to reduce anxiety is to use a parrot. Let me explain.
One of the key causes of making a normal anxiety worse so that it becomes problematic is our tendency to exaggerate. So, for example, it would be normal for me to be anxious about going to a meeting with strangers. I could make that normal mild anxiety worse by exaggerating all kinds of things that I am telling myself:
- They will all look at me and think I am ugly/stupid.
- I will not have anything intelligent to say.
- They will ignore me or be nasty to me.
If I imagine that I have a talking parrot glued to my shoulder 24/7 and that the talking parrot can only say two words, it may help me get back to the truth. The only two words that the parrot can say are: "So what?"
It helps me realise that even if all of the above things actually happened (and of course, they are extremely unlikely to do so), it isn't the end of the world. It may be bad, but not as bad as I am imagining, and I would cope. Those two words help me reduce the exaggeration of my fantasy and get a true perspective.
